What does a TRT assessment after steroid use include?

How long does testosterone take to recover after steroids?

Testosterone takes about 6 to 18 months to recover after steroids in most men. In a study of 31 former users, LH, the brain signal for testosterone, recovered after 10.7 months on average and sperm output after 14.1 months (Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, 2020).

A longer duration of use slowed the recovery of sperm output. The testes often stayed smaller than before.

Is TRT the right step after steroid use?

TRT (testosterone replacement therapy) is the right step after steroid use only when your own testosterone stays low. Recovery comes first, and TRT is considered when symptoms and repeated low morning results persist after that time.

Some men stay low for years. In a Danish study, former users still had lower testosterone than non-users two and a half years after stopping: 14.4 against 18.8 nmol/L, about a quarter less (PLoS One, 2016). Studies have not shown that hCG or clomiphene speed up recovery after steroids.

What happens after you stop steroids?

After you stop steroids, your hormones are tested at set points until a decision is possible. The first meaningful test is 3 months after the last dose.

What else matters after steroid use?

Heart, blood and mood matter as much as testosterone after steroid use. In a Danish study of 545 men who tested positive for steroids at fitness centres, the death rate was three times higher than in 5,450 non-users (Journal of Internal Medicine, 2019).

  • Heart: blood pressure and cholesterol are checked and treated.
  • Blood count: a high haematocrit raises the risk of clots.
  • Mood: low mood and low desire are common in the first year after stopping.
  • Fertility: sperm output takes longer to recover than testosterone.

Are steroids and peptides from gyms legal in the UAE?

No, testosterone and other hormones from gyms or online sellers are illegal in the UAE without a prescription. The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention stated that hormones, especially injections, need a prescription from a licensed doctor and medical tests first (Khaleej Times, 2019). The ministry also warned that most of these products come from unlicensed manufacturers.

In July 2026 the Emirates Drug Establishment acted against 71 sources and 14 influencers selling unapproved peptide products online (Gulf News, 2026). Products from these sources are not continued unchanged; Dr Felix records what was used and plans a safe route.
