In short
Wegovy tablets are once-daily oral semaglutide for weight management, approved in the UAE by the Emirates Drug Establishment in 2026. In the OASIS 4 trial, adults without diabetes lost 13.6 percent of their body weight on average over 64 weeks on the 25 mg tablet, compared with 2.2 percent on placebo. Wegovy tablets are taken every morning on an empty stomach and need a doctor’s prescription in Dubai.
Treatment Overview
What are Wegovy tablets?
Wegovy tablets are once-daily semaglutide tablets for long-term weight management. Semaglutide acts like GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1), a gut hormone that slows stomach emptying and signals fullness to the brain, so appetite and food intake fall. The weekly Wegovy injection contains the same active ingredient.
The Emirates Drug Establishment approved Wegovy tablets for long-term weight management in adults with obesity, or with overweight and a weight-related condition, according to its press release. The UAE was the second country worldwide to approve the tablet.
Who qualifies for Wegovy tablets?
Adults qualify for Wegovy tablets with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol or sleep apnoea, when structured lifestyle change has not produced 5 percent weight loss. Clinical guidance uses a lower threshold for people of Asian background. The full criteria and a 1-minute check: am I eligible for Mounjaro or Wegovy.
How are Wegovy tablets taken?
Wegovy tablets are taken once a day in the morning on an empty stomach, with no more than 120 mL of water, about half a glass. Food, other drinks and other tablets follow after at least 30 minutes. Clinical guidance names this routine as the condition for adequate absorption and effect of oral semaglutide.
The daily routine is the main practical difference to the weekly injection. A patient who takes thyroid tablets or other morning medicines plans the order with Dr Felix before starting.
How is the Wegovy tablet dose increased?
The Wegovy tablet dose starts at 1.5 mg daily and rises every 30 days to the recommended dose of 25 mg daily, according to the US prescribing information summarised in clinical guidance. The table lists the four steps.
| Step | Daily dose | Time on this dose |
|---|---|---|
| Start | 1.5 mg | 30 days |
| Second step | 4 mg | 30 days |
| Third step | 9 mg | 30 days |
| Maintenance | 25 mg | Ongoing |
The dose rise reaches the full dose after about 3 months. A dose step is delayed when nausea or other side effects are still strong, and the lowest dose that reaches the goal is used.
How much weight do people lose on Wegovy tablets?
Adults without diabetes lost 13.6 percent of their body weight on average after 64 weeks on the 25 mg tablet in the OASIS 4 trial, compared with 2.2 percent on placebo. For a person weighing 100 kg, that average equals about 13.6 kg. Individual results vary widely.
The clinician reviews the response after an appropriate treatment period using the continuation criteria for the particular medicine. Less than 4 to 5 percent weight loss at that point, 4 to 5 kg at a weight of 100 kg, leads to a change of plan.
Should you choose Wegovy tablets or the injection?
Wegovy tablets and the Wegovy injection contain the same active ingredient and differ mainly in routine and in the weight loss seen in the trials. The table compares the two forms.
| Wegovy tablets | Wegovy injection | |
|---|---|---|
| How often | Once a day, every morning | Once a week |
| How taken | Empty stomach, half a glass of water, 30 minutes before food | Injection under the skin with a pen |
| Top dose | 25 mg daily | 2.4 mg weekly |
| Average weight loss in the main trial | 13.6 percent over 64 weeks (OASIS 4) | 14.9 percent over 68 weeks (STEP 1) |
The two trials enrolled different people, so the numbers are not a direct comparison. Clinical guidance names oral semaglutide 25 mg as a reasonable alternative to the weekly injections. A goal of 15 percent weight loss or more, 15 kg at 100 kg, usually needs tirzepatide or injected semaglutide: Mounjaro for weight loss.
Wegovy tablets in Dubai and the UAE
Are Wegovy tablets approved in the UAE?
Yes, the Emirates Drug Establishment approved the once-daily Wegovy tablet for long-term weight management in 2026, and the UAE was the second country worldwide to do so, according to the Emirates Drug Establishment. Wegovy tablets need a prescription and a medical assessment first.
Where do Wegovy tablets come from in Dubai?
Wegovy tablets are dispensed by licensed pharmacies on a doctor’s prescription. The Emirates Drug Establishment advises buying medicines only from licensed pharmacies and authorised healthcare facilities, and in July 2026 it took action against 71 sources selling unapproved weight loss peptides.
Can Wegovy tablets be taken during Ramadan?
GLP-1-based medicines such as semaglutide can usually be continued during Ramadan, but are not started in the weeks just before the fast, according to clinical guidance on religious fasting. That guidance comes mainly from people with diabetes. The morning routine of the tablet, an empty stomach and 30 minutes before food, is planned around suhoor at a review before Ramadan. Insulin and sulfonylureas need a separate plan because fasting raises the risk of low blood sugar.

Program Structure & Follow-Up
How is treatment with Wegovy tablets monitored?
Treatment with Wegovy tablets is monitored every 4 to 6 weeks while the dose rises, then about every 2 to 3 months, in line with clinical guidance. The reviews cover the following points:
- Tolerance: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, reflux, and symptoms of pancreatitis or gallbladder disease
- Weight and health: weight, waist, blood pressure and blood tests at agreed points
- Diabetes: blood sugar checks during dose increases for people on insulin or sulfonylureas
Muscle is protected through enough protein, strength training and body composition checks: how muscle is protected on GLP-1 medicines. Between appointments, patients can contact the practice directly through the Weight Loss Membership.
What happens after stopping Wegovy tablets?
After stopping semaglutide, most people regain a large part of the weight they lost. A meta-analysis of 37 studies found an average regain of 0.4 kg per month after stopping obesity medicines, with a projected return to the starting weight within about two years. The plan for that phase: weight maintenance.
Benefits, Limits & Safety
What are the side effects of Wegovy tablets?
The most common side effects of Wegovy tablets are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and constipation. Across GLP-1-based medicines, 25 to 40 percent of patients experience nausea and about 10 to 20 percent vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation, usually mild to moderate and worst after a dose increase.
Serious but less common problems reported with GLP-1-based medicines are gallbladder disease, bowel obstruction and pancreatitis. Severe abdominal pain that spreads to the back, especially with vomiting, needs urgent medical assessment.
What are the limits of Wegovy tablets?
Wegovy tablets work only while they are taken and need a strict morning routine. Long-term safety data for the newer GLP-1-based medicines are still limited, which clinical guidance names openly. Compounded or unapproved semaglutide products are not used, because they have not passed regulatory review.
What the evidence shows
13.6 percent average weight loss over 64 weeks on the 25 mg tablet in OASIS 4, against 2.2 percent on placebo.
How you are followed
Reviews every 4 to 6 weeks during dose steps, then about every 2 to 3 months, covering tolerance, weight, blood pressure and blood tests.
When Wegovy tablets are not used
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2. Usually avoided with severe inflammatory bowel disease or gastroparesis.
Cost & Program Investment
What treatment with Wegovy tablets costs depends on the dose and the length of treatment. Dr Felix explains the figure before any prescription.

Wegovy tablets 25 mg produced 13.6 percent average weight loss over 64 weeks in OASIS 4, and the weekly injection 14.9 percent over 68 weeks in STEP 1. The trials enrolled different people, so the figures are close but not a direct comparison.
Coffee, food and other tablets follow at least 30 minutes after the Wegovy tablet. The tablet is swallowed on an empty stomach with no more than 120 mL of water, because food and larger drinks reduce how much semaglutide is absorbed.
