Overview

Eligibility for Mounjaro or Wegovy follows published criteria: body mass index, weight-related conditions and a small number of medical reasons that rule the medicines out.

Direct Answer

You are eligible for Mounjaro (tirzepatide) or Wegovy (semaglutide) for weight loss when your body mass index (BMI) is 30 or more, or 27 or more together with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea. The clinician reviews previous weight-management efforts and plans nutrition and activity support alongside treatment. A fixed three-to-six-month waiting period is not a universal licensed requirement.

Three situations rule the medicines out or need a doctor’s review first: pregnancy or breastfeeding, a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2), and a past episode of pancreatitis.

The 1-minute check below calculates your BMI and shows which of these criteria apply to you.

Who This Applies To

  • Adults with a BMI of 30 or more
  • Adults with a BMI of 27 to 29.9 and a weight-related condition
  • Adults with a large waist who need a metabolic risk assessment; waist size alone does not establish medication eligibility
  • Adults whose family background affects metabolic risk, while the prescribed product’s local indication still needs checking
  • Adults whose previous weight-management efforts and need for additional treatment have been reviewed

Option Comparison / Decision Criteria

Which conditions count as weight-related?

Weight-related conditions are illnesses that excess weight causes or worsens. Clinical guidance names nine: type 2 diabetes, abnormal blood fats (dyslipidaemia) such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, obstructive sleep apnoea (breathing pauses during sleep), osteoarthritis with symptoms, fatty liver (hepatic steatosis), mental health conditions and difficulty with physical function.

One of these conditions together with a BMI of 27 to 29.9 meets the criteria. The conditions behind weight gain have their own pages: obesity, overweight, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome.

Who is not eligible for Mounjaro or Wegovy right now?

Mounjaro, Wegovy and the other GLP-1-based medicines are not used in six situations, according to clinical guidance and the European product information. The table lists each situation and what it means.

Situations that rule out or delay GLP-1 medicines
Situation What it means
Pregnancy The medicines are not used. Wegovy is stopped at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy.
Breastfeeding Individual product and infant factors require review. Available milk-transfer data do not establish safety for every breastfeeding infant; do not start treatment without specialist advice.
Medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2 A personal or family history rules the medicines out.
Pancreatitis in the past The medicines are used only once the cause is resolved, for example after gallbladder removal for gallstone pancreatitis.
Severe inflammatory bowel disease or gastroparesis The medicines are avoided, because the risk of severe digestive side effects is high. Gastroparesis means the stomach empties very slowly.
No structured lifestyle programme yet Nutrition and activity support are part of care. The timing of medication depends on clinical need and the particular product; there is no universal three-to-six-month waiting rule.

Women who did not meet the criteria before pregnancy usually complete three to six months of lifestyle change after delivery before medication is considered. The details: post-pregnancy weight loss.

Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic: who is each one for?

Mounjaro and Wegovy share the same weight criteria, while Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes. The table lists the licensed use of each injection in the European Union.

Licensed use of the three weekly injections (European Medicines Agency)
Medicine Licensed use and weight criteria
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) Weight management and type 2 diabetes. For weight: BMI 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition.
Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4 mg) Weight management. BMI 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition.
Ozempic (semaglutide up to 2 mg) Type 2 diabetes only. No weight criteria.

Ozempic prescribed only for weight is off-label use. For weight loss without diabetes, Wegovy is the semaglutide product with a licence and trial evidence for that purpose.

Does a lower BMI threshold apply to people of Asian background?

Some guidelines use lower BMI thresholds to assess risk in certain ethnic groups. This does not automatically change the UAE licensed indication for a medicine. The UK NICE guideline NG246 sets obesity at a BMI of 27.5 instead of 30 for adults of South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean family background. Overweight starts at 23 instead of 25 in the same groups.

Does a large waist count without a high BMI?

A large waist can indicate increased metabolic risk and is a reason for assessment. It does not automatically meet the licensed criteria for a weight-loss medicine when BMI is below 27. Common adult weight-management indications use BMI 30 or above, or 27 or above with a qualifying weight-related condition. The clinician checks the exact product and current UAE prescribing information.

Which medicine fits which goal?

The weight loss goal narrows the choice of medicine. A goal of 15 percent or more, 15 kg at a starting weight of 100 kg, normally needs tirzepatide or semaglutide, the two most effective agents. A goal below 15 percent is often reached with liraglutide or orforglipron, which are less effective.

Three conditions change the choice further: sleep apnoea favours tirzepatide, established heart disease without diabetes favours semaglutide, and type 2 diabetes opens additional options.

Why an In-Person Physician Review Matters

Lifestyle change comes first because nutrition, activity and sleep are the foundation of weight treatment and continue for everyone who starts medication.

Previous weight changes help the clinician understand your response and agree a realistic goal; treatment timing is individualised. The weight-related conditions change which medicine is chosen and how it is monitored. Type 2 diabetes treated with insulin or sulfonylureas needs lower doses of those medicines during the first weeks, because weight loss lowers blood sugar. Some medicines for diabetes, depression and autoimmune disease cause weight gain, and switching one of them to a weight-neutral alternative addresses part of the problem without a new prescription. An insufficient response prompts review using the product-specific treatment duration and continuation criteria, rather than an automatic 12-week switch. At a weight of 100 kg, that threshold is 4 to 5 kg. The exception is a weight that was rising steadily and stopped rising on treatment, which counts as a response.

Can I get Mounjaro or Wegovy in Dubai without a consultation?

No, Mounjaro and Wegovy in Dubai are prescribed after a medical assessment, and Dr Felix Happich prescribes only after an examination, blood tests and a review of your medicines. The Emirates Drug Establishment advises buying medicines only from licensed pharmacies and authorised healthcare facilities. In July 2026 it took action against 71 online sources selling unapproved weight loss peptides.

The UAE also approved two daily weight loss tablets in 2026, oral semaglutide (Wegovy tablet) and orforglipron (Foundayo). The same criteria apply to both: Wegovy tablets and Foundayo weight loss tablet.

What does the first appointment establish?

The first appointment establishes whether you are eligible now or whether the lifestyle phase comes first. Dr Felix checks five points:

  1. BMI, waist measurement and the weight-related conditions
  2. Weight loss attempts so far and how long each lasted
  3. Current medicines, including any that cause weight gain
  4. Your weight loss goal, which guides the choice of medicine
  5. Blood tests, including blood sugar, blood fats, liver and kidney values

How often are reviews once treatment starts?

Reviews follow a fixed rhythm from clinical guidance during the first year.

Every 4 to 6 weeks: tolerance is checked and the dose adjusted.

Every 2 to 3 months: weight, blood pressure, pulse and side effects are reviewed.

After 12 weeks at the highest tolerated dose: the decision is made whether the medicine is working.

Once the dose is stable: follow-up becomes less frequent.

How the medicines work in detail: Mounjaro for weight loss, Wegovy for weight loss and GLP-1 weight loss treatment. The full programme: Medical Weight Loss Clinic Dubai. The cost structure: medical weight loss cost in Dubai.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mounjaro and Wegovy are prescribed from a BMI of 30, or from 27 with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol or sleep apnoea. For adults of South Asian, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean background, the UK NICE guideline places obesity at a BMI of 27.5.

A BMI of 28 meets the criteria for Mounjaro or Wegovy only together with a weight-related condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, sleep apnoea, fatty liver or knee osteoarthritis. Waist size provides additional risk information but does not replace the product's BMI criteria.

Breastfeeding needs a separate, product-specific discussion. Evidence differs between medicines and some tirzepatide milk-transfer data now exist, but these do not establish safety for every infant or support self-treatment. Discuss the current local product information, infant factors and alternatives with the prescriber.

No, the eligibility check applies the published criteria to your own answers. Dr Felix confirms eligibility after an examination, blood tests and a review of your current medicines.
