In short

PCOS weight gain is weight gain, mostly around the abdomen, in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), driven by insulin resistance. At least half of women with PCOS have obesity, and most have insulin resistance independent of weight. Even modest weight loss often makes periods more regular.

Condition Overview

What is PCOS weight gain?

PCOS weight gain is weight gain in women with polycystic ovary syndrome, a hormonal condition with irregular ovulation and raised male hormones. Experts have proposed the new name polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) to reflect the metabolic side.

Why do women with PCOS gain weight?

Women with PCOS gain weight because insulin resistance raises insulin levels, which increase male hormone production and fat storage around the abdomen. High insulin also lowers sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), so more free testosterone circulates.

What are the health risks of PCOS with weight gain?

PCOS raises the risk of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, fatty liver and sleep apnoea. In one study, 45 percent of 122 women with PCOS and obesity had impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes by age 40. Fatty liver was found in 43 percent of women with PCOS in a review of 36 studies.

Does weight loss help PCOS?

Yes, many women with PCOS and obesity have more regular periods after modest weight loss, according to clinical guidance. Blood sugar, blood fats and fertility improve as well.

Which tests are done for PCOS weight gain?

The tests for PCOS weight gain are HbA1c or a 75 g glucose tolerance test, lipids, liver enzymes and thyroid function. The 2-hour glucose test finds more diabetes in PCOS than fasting glucose. Insulin levels are not measured routinely.

PCOS in Dubai and the UAE

Why does PCOS weight matter in the UAE?

In the UAE Healthy Future Study of 5,167 adults aged 18 to 40, abnormal blood fats affected 62.7 percent and obesity 26.5 percent, about 6 and 3 in 10 young adults (BMC Cardiovascular Disorders, 2023).

High rates of obesity and raised blood sugar in young UAE adults make the metabolic side of PCOS especially relevant.

Dr Felix treats within the scope of his Dubai Health Authority licence. When a case needs a specialist view, for example suspected Cushing’s syndrome, a severe eating disorder or weight loss surgery, the decision is made together with an endocrinologist, psychiatrist or bariatric surgeon.
