In short

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of at least 3 of 5 risk factors: large waist, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure and raised fasting blood sugar. Metabolic syndrome raises the risk of type 2 diabetes about 3 to 5 times and of heart disease about 2 times. In the UAE, 31.2 percent of adults have it.

Condition Overview

What is metabolic syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is the combination of abdominal obesity, raised blood sugar, abnormal blood fats and high blood pressure in one person. The risk factors occur together because they share a common driver, insulin resistance: insulin resistance.

How is metabolic syndrome diagnosed?

Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed when 3 of these 5 criteria are present, according to the ATP III definition.

Criteria of metabolic syndrome
Criterion Threshold
Waist 102 cm or more in men, 88 cm or more in women
Triglycerides 150 mg/dL (1.7 mmol/L) or more, or treatment
HDL cholesterol Under 40 mg/dL in men, under 50 mg/dL in women
Blood pressure 130/85 mmHg or more, or treatment
Fasting glucose 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L) or more, or treatment

An HbA1c of 5.7 to 6.4 percent is increasingly used as the blood sugar criterion.

How much does metabolic syndrome raise risk?

In the Framingham population, metabolic syndrome raised the risk of type 2 diabetes 3.3 to 4.6 times and of cardiovascular disease 1.7 to 2.1 times, depending on the definition. Metabolic syndrome counts as a risk-enhancing factor when cholesterol treatment is decided.

Is metabolic syndrome the same as insulin resistance?

No, but most people with metabolic syndrome have insulin resistance, and people with one or two criteria often have the others. A normal weight does not exclude metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome in Dubai and the UAE

How common is metabolic syndrome in the UAE?

A review of 60 UAE studies found metabolic syndrome in 31.2 percent of adults, nearly 1 in 3, and too little physical activity in 32.2 percent (Sports Medicine, 2026).

In the UAE Healthy Future Study of 5,167 adults aged 18 to 40, abnormal blood fats affected 62.7 percent and obesity 26.5 percent, about 6 and 3 in 10 young adults (BMC Cardiovascular Disorders, 2023).

Dr Felix treats within the scope of his Dubai Health Authority licence. When a case needs a specialist view, for example suspected Cushing’s syndrome, a severe eating disorder or weight loss surgery, the decision is made together with an endocrinologist, psychiatrist or bariatric surgeon.

How metabolic syndrome is treated: metabolic weight loss and GLP-1 weight loss treatment. With fatty liver: weight loss injections for fatty liver.

Your first consultation

Sit down with Dr. Felix, say what you want to know and leave with a clear plan. One physician, from the first question to the follow-up.

When to See a Doctor

  • Your waist is above the limit and one blood test was borderline.
  • You were told of high triglycerides, low HDL or borderline blood pressure.
  • A parent or sibling has type 2 diabetes or early heart disease.
  • You have fatty liver on an ultrasound.
  • Chest pain or breathlessness on exertion: heart assessment first.
  • Thirst, frequent urination and weight loss: tests for diabetes the same week.

Treatment Options

Why Early Treatment Can Matter

Treating metabolic syndrome early delays or prevents type 2 diabetes and lowers cardiovascular risk. Weight loss and more activity improve all 5 criteria at once.

Diabetes delayed

Weight loss and activity slow the progression to diabetes.

Heart risk

Blood pressure and blood fats improve together.

Frequently Asked Questions

3 of the 5 criteria mean metabolic syndrome: large waist, high triglycerides, low HDL, high blood pressure and raised fasting glucose.

Yes, the waist is only one of 5 criteria, and metabolic syndrome occurs at a normal BMI.

Weight loss and regular activity improve all criteria, and many people no longer meet 3 of them.
