In short
Brain fog in menopause is forgetfulness, trouble finding words and slower concentration during the menopausal transition, and it is usually temporary. The largest study of women through the transition, SWAN, found no decline in cognitive function. Poor sleep, low mood and anxiety make it worse.
Condition Overview
What is brain fog in menopause?
Brain fog in menopause is forgetfulness, difficulty retrieving words and a sense of slower thinking during the menopausal transition. Brain fog affects verbal memory, word finding and attention to several tasks at once. Brain fog does not cause forgetting of whole events, getting lost in familiar places or loss of everyday skills.
Is brain fog in menopause permanent?
No, brain fog in menopause is usually temporary. The SWAN study, the largest long-term study of women through the transition, found no decline in cognitive function, but anxiety and depression worsened performance. In a study of over 200 men and women aged 45 to 55, women before menopause outperformed men of the same age on memory tasks, and the advantage narrowed after menopause.
What makes brain fog worse?
Brain fog is made worse by broken sleep, anxiety and low mood, the most common and most treatable drivers. The table lists the others.
| Cause | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Night sweats and broken sleep | The largest amplifier |
| Anxiety and low mood | Both lower concentration directly |
| Thyroid disease | Produces the same picture |
| Iron or vitamin B12 deficiency | Common and easy to correct |
| Alcohol and sedating medicines | Impair memory the next day |
Is brain fog the start of dementia?
Brain fog is almost never the start of dementia, and the features differ. Brain fog fluctuates, is worse when tired and affects word finding. Dementia progresses, affects everyday tasks and is often noticed by others first. Getting lost in familiar places, forgetting whole conversations or a sudden change leads to a formal assessment.
Which tests help with brain fog?
The tests that help with brain fog are thyroid function, a blood count with ferritin, vitamin B12 and blood sugar. They find the correctable causes that are most often missed. Hormone levels do not measure brain fog.
Brain fog in Dubai and the UAE
How does mood affect brain fog in the UAE?
In a UAE study of 279 women, 56.6 percent had at least mild depression and 10 percent severe depression, more than half and 1 in 10. Severe depression affected 16.7 percent of women in perimenopause against 4.3 percent after menopause, about 1 in 6 against 1 in 23 (Frontiers in Global Women’s Health, 2026).
Low mood lowers concentration on its own, so mood is assessed with every complaint of brain fog: hormonal mood changes.
Dr Felix treats within the scope of his Dubai Health Authority licence. When a case needs a specialist view, for example bleeding after menopause, a breast finding or severe depression, the decision is made together with a gynaecologist, breast specialist or psychiatrist.
When night sweats break sleep: HRT patch or oestrogen gel or non-hormonal menopause treatment. A first check: the menopause self-check.
