In short
Hormonal mood changes are irritability, anxiety and low mood that appear or worsen during the menopausal transition. New depression is 2.5 times more likely during the transition than before it, most of all in women with earlier depression. The risk falls again after menopause.
Condition Overview
What are hormonal mood changes?
Hormonal mood changes are irritability, anxiety, tearfulness, low mood and loss of confidence linked to fluctuating hormones in perimenopause. In perimenopause the changes often worsen before a period and vary from week to week.
How common is depression in the menopausal transition?
New depression is 2.5 times more likely during the menopausal transition than in the same women before it, in an 8-year study. The link is strongest in women with earlier depression or mood problems, and the risk falls again in the early years after menopause.
How do hormonal mood changes differ from depression?
Hormonal mood changes and depression differ in their pattern, and the treatments differ too.
| Pattern | More likely |
|---|---|
| Comes and goes, worse before a period | Hormonal mood change |
| Constant low mood with loss of interest and hopelessness | Depression |
| Constant worry, tension or panic attacks | Anxiety disorder |
Low mood that persists after flushes and sleep are controlled is usually not mainly hormonal.
How does sleep affect mood in menopause?
Broken sleep lowers mood on its own, and anxiety and depression in turn predict poor sleep. Sleep and mood are therefore assessed together: hormonal sleep disturbance.
What else causes mood changes at this age?
Mood changes at this age also come from thyroid disease, iron deficiency, alcohol, medicines including hormonal contraception, and stress. Each is checked, because treating a hormonal cause that is not there leaves the real one untreated.
Mood in menopause in Dubai and the UAE
How common is depression in menopause in the UAE?
In a UAE study of 279 women, 56.6 percent had at least mild depression and 10 percent severe depression, more than half and 1 in 10. Severe depression affected 16.7 percent of women in perimenopause against 4.3 percent after menopause, about 1 in 6 against 1 in 23 (Frontiers in Global Women’s Health, 2026).
The same study linked poor sleep with repeated waking, inactivity and smoking with depression.
Dr Felix treats within the scope of his Dubai Health Authority licence. When a case needs a specialist view, for example bleeding after menopause, a breast finding or severe depression, the decision is made together with a gynaecologist, breast specialist or psychiatrist.
How mood changes in perimenopause are treated: perimenopause treatment. Without hormones: non-hormonal menopause treatment.
