In short

Low libido in men is a persistent loss of sexual interest that causes distress, and it is a different problem from erectile dysfunction. Reduced libido affects about 5 to 15 percent of men, up to about 1 in 7, and rises with age. The common causes are low testosterone, depression, medicines, alcohol, stress and relationship problems, and most of them are treatable.

Condition Overview

What is low libido in men?

Low libido in men is a lasting reduction in sexual thoughts and interest that bothers the man or his relationship. Desire varies with age, health and circumstances, and a difference in desire between partners is not in itself a dysfunction in either partner.

Is low libido the same as erectile dysfunction?

No, low libido and erectile dysfunction are separate problems with different causes. Most men with erectile dysfunction do not report low desire, and a man with ED sometimes loses desire as a consequence. The order in which the problems started shows which one came first: erectile dysfunction.

How common is low libido in men?

Reduced libido affects about 5 to 15 percent of men, between 1 in 20 and 1 in 7, according to clinical guidance. It increases with age and often accompanies other sexual and urinary problems.

What causes low libido in men?

Low libido in men has hormonal, medical, psychological and lifestyle causes. The common causes are:

  • Hormones: low testosterone, raised prolactin, low oestradiol, and an underactive or overactive thyroid
  • Medicines: SSRI antidepressants, anti-androgens, 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors such as finasteride and dutasteride, and opioid painkillers
  • Mood: depression, anxiety and stress
  • Alcohol and drugs: about 40 g of alcohol a day, roughly 3 drinks, impairs testosterone production; cannabis and cocaine also lower libido
  • Illness and fatigue: chronic illness, poor sleep and exhaustion
  • Relationship: conflict, and a partner’s own sexual problem

Is low testosterone the cause of low libido?

Low testosterone is one important cause, but not the most common one in most men. Normal testosterone levels are important for desire, and replacement improves desire in men with a confirmed deficiency. Testosterone does not raise desire in men whose level is already normal. How the deficiency is confirmed: low testosterone.

How is low libido in men assessed?

Low libido in men is assessed with a detailed history and a short, targeted set of blood tests: morning total testosterone, prolactin, oestradiol and thyroid function, according to clinical guidance. A low testosterone is repeated on a second morning with LH before any conclusion. The history covers mood, sleep, alcohol, medicines and the relationship.

Low libido in men in Dubai and the UAE

Why do men in the UAE rarely raise low desire?

The UAE expert panel on erectile dysfunction recorded that many men in the region do not raise sexual problems with a doctor at all; in one regional survey 28 percent of men, more than 1 in 4, said they would not discuss the problem with their doctor (Journal of Multidisciplinary Healthcare, 2025). The panel also found that men in the UAE present younger than in most published series.

What about libido products sold in Dubai?

Between one third and one half of supplements sold as natural sexual enhancers contain undeclared synthetic drugs, usually PDE5 inhibitors, according to clinical guidance, and the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention has warned against such products (Khaleej Times). A PDE5 inhibitor treats erections, not desire.

A consultation about a sexual problem with Dr Felix is private and documented with ordinary medical confidentiality. Nothing requires a partner to attend or to be told.

How low libido in men is treated: low libido treatment for men in Dubai. When testosterone is confirmed low: testosterone replacement therapy.

Treatment Options

Why Early Treatment Can Matter

Early assessment of low libido in men finds treatable causes such as depression, raised prolactin or thyroid disease, which do not respond to testosterone. Raised prolactin in particular points to a pituitary cause that needs its own work-up.

Early assessment also prevents testosterone being started on a single borderline result, which is difficult to reverse and leaves the real cause untreated.

The cause treated

Desire improves when the actual cause is treated, hormonal or not.

The missed diagnosis

Depression, pituitary and thyroid problems are found at the first assessment.

Four blood tests

Testosterone, prolactin, oestradiol and thyroid function instead of a broad hormone panel.
