In short

Emotional eating is eating in response to stress, boredom, sadness or tiredness rather than hunger. When it comes with loss of control over large amounts of food at least once a week for 3 months, it is binge eating disorder, which affects 14 percent of adults seeking obesity treatment, about 1 in 7.

Condition Overview

What is emotional eating?

Emotional eating is eating to cope with feelings such as stress, anxiety, boredom or low mood, often in the evening and often sweet or fatty food. Emotional eating becomes a medical problem when it drives weight gain or causes distress.

What is binge eating disorder?

Binge eating disorder is eating an unusually large amount of food in a short time with a sense of loss of control, at least once a week for 3 months, followed by distress, without vomiting or other compensation. Eating fast, eating alone from embarrassment and feeling guilty afterwards are typical.

How common is binge eating disorder?

Binge eating disorder affects about 1.9 percent of adults during their lifetime and 14 percent of adults seeking obesity treatment, in a review of 85 studies with over 94,000 people. Binge eating disorder is 2 to 3 times more common in women and 10 times more common in severe obesity than in class I obesity. The median age at onset is 21.

What causes emotional and binge eating?

Emotional and binge eating come from genes, stress, dieting cycles and a strong reward drive to eat that overrides hunger and fullness signals. Genes explain 39 to 45 percent of the risk of binge eating disorder. Strict dieting often triggers binges.

How is emotional eating assessed?

Emotional eating is assessed with a history of eating patterns and a short validated questionnaire, the eating section of the Patient Health Questionnaire, which finds binge eating disorder with a sensitivity of 89 percent. Mood, anxiety and sleep are assessed at the same time.

Emotional eating in Dubai and the UAE

Why does emotional eating matter in the UAE?

The national UAE health survey 2024 to 2025 found obesity in 22.4 percent of adults, more than 1 in 5, high blood pressure in 25.9 percent, raised blood sugar in 12.5 percent and too little physical activity in 59.1 percent (MOHAP survey, reported by WAM).

Long working hours, late meals and eating out are part of daily life in Dubai, so eating patterns are assessed with every weight consultation.

Dr Felix treats within the scope of his Dubai Health Authority licence. When a case needs a specialist view, for example suspected Cushing’s syndrome, a severe eating disorder or weight loss surgery, the decision is made together with an endocrinologist, psychiatrist or bariatric surgeon.

How weight is treated with emotional eating: GLP-1 weight loss treatment, which lowers appetite and food noise, and weight maintenance.
