The type decides the treatment
Lifelong premature ejaculation responds best to daily treatment, acquired premature ejaculation to treating its cause, for example an erection problem or a thyroid disorder.

What does premature ejaculation treatment with Dr Felix include?
Premature ejaculation treatment with Dr Felix includes 4 parts: diagnosis of the type, a check for erectile dysfunction, a medicine that fits your pattern and a behavioural technique. Combining a medicine with a behavioural technique works better than either alone, according to the American Urological Association guideline on disorders of ejaculation (Journal of Urology, 2022).
- Type: lifelong premature ejaculation starts with the first sexual experience; acquired premature ejaculation starts after years of normal control.
- Erections: men with erectile dysfunction often ejaculate early to finish before the erection fades, so the erection problem is treated first.
- Medicine: a daily or on-demand selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), a medicine that delays the ejaculation reflex, or a numbing spray.
- Technique: the stop-start and squeeze techniques, practised alone or with a partner.
What premature ejaculation is and how it is diagnosed: premature ejaculation.

Which medicines treat premature ejaculation?
Three groups of medicines treat premature ejaculation: daily SSRIs, dapoxetine taken on demand and a local anaesthetic spray. Daily SSRIs delay ejaculation more than on-demand tablets, with the full effect after 2 to 3 weeks.
- Daily SSRI: paroxetine, sertraline, fluoxetine, citalopram or escitalopram at low doses, taken every day; the first choice for lifelong premature ejaculation.
- Dapoxetine on demand: a short-acting SSRI taken 1 to 3 hours before sex, at 30 or 60 mg; studied in 5 trials with more than 6,000 men.
- Lidocaine-prilocaine spray: a numbing spray applied to the penis 5 minutes before sex, for men who prefer no tablets.
- Clomipramine: an older antidepressant used as a second option at low doses when SSRIs do not suit.
Dapoxetine (Priligy) is sold in the UAE as a prescription-only medicine at 30 mg and 60 mg (Aster Pharmacy UAE).
Does premature ejaculation treatment work if erections are also a problem?
Yes, but the order changes: when erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation occur together, the erection problem is treated first with a PDE5 inhibitor, and the timing often improves with it, as the American Urological Association guideline advises (Journal of Urology, 2022).
PDE5 inhibitors (phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors), the erection tablets sildenafil and tadalafil, reduce the pressure to finish quickly. A daily SSRI is added when early ejaculation continues with firm erections.
Is premature ejaculation treatment safe?
Premature ejaculation treatment is safe when a doctor chooses the medicine and the dose. SSRIs are not combined with some migraine medicines, other antidepressants, tramadol or MDMA, because the combination raises the risk of serotonin syndrome, a dangerous overload of serotonin.
- Common side effects: nausea, headache, dizziness and tiredness, usually mild and in the first weeks.
- Dapoxetine: taken with a full glass of water; alcohol and standing up quickly raise the risk of fainting.
- Stopping daily SSRIs: the dose is reduced step by step rather than stopped suddenly.
- Mood: SSRIs are also antidepressants; young men are asked about mood changes at follow-up.
A regional survey of 1,008 men cited by the UAE expert panel on erectile dysfunction found that 84.1 percent of men using erection tablets had bought them without a prescription, more than 8 in 10, and only 38.1 percent of the users had erectile dysfunction at all (Journal of Multidisciplinary Healthcare, 2025). The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention has warned against sexual enhancement products that contain undeclared sildenafil, tadalafil or vardenafil, because of the risk of a severe fall in blood pressure (Khaleej Times).
Premature ejaculation treatment in Dubai and the UAE
Premature ejaculation affects men in the Gulf region as often as elsewhere. In a study of 3,042 married men in Qatar, 38.5 percent reported premature ejaculation, close to 4 in 10 (Arab Journal of Urology, 2021).
In the UAE, SSRIs and dapoxetine are prescription-only medicines, controlled by the Dubai Health Authority for Dubai (Dubai Health Authority). The consultation is confidential and your medical record stays with the practice.
