What does ED treatment with high blood pressure include?

ED (erectile dysfunction) treatment with high blood pressure with Dr Felix includes 6 checks. The plan looks at your blood pressure, your medicines and your heart before any erection tablet.

  • Blood pressure: confirmed with home readings, not one rushed measurement.
  • Medicines: every tablet you take, including nitrates and alpha blockers.
  • Heart: cholesterol, blood sugar and your cardiovascular risk.
  • Testosterone: a morning blood test when desire is also low.
  • Lifestyle: weight, salt, alcohol and activity.
  • Mood: stress and worry about sex and the heart.

Do blood pressure tablets cause erectile dysfunction?

Some blood pressure tablets cause erectile dysfunction, most do not. In the TOMHS trial of 902 people with mild high blood pressure, erection problems after 24 months were more common with chlorthalidone, a water tablet, than with placebo, 17.1 against 8.1 percent (Hypertension, 1997).

Angiotensin receptor blockers, ACE inhibitors and calcium channel blockers are the least likely to affect erections. Beta blockers raised the risk only slightly in trials.

Can I take erection tablets with high blood pressure?

Yes, erection tablets are safe with most blood pressure medicines. Side effects such as dizziness and fainting were not more common in sildenafil users who also took blood pressure medicines.

Nitrates, the medicines for chest pain, are never combined with erection tablets. With alpha blockers, a stable dose comes first and the erection tablet starts at the lowest dose. Uncontrolled high blood pressure is treated before sex-related treatment starts.

Is erectile dysfunction a warning sign for the heart?

Yes, erectile dysfunction is an early warning sign for heart disease. Men with erectile dysfunction had about 45 percent more cardiovascular disease and 55 percent more heart attacks than men without it.

  • Shared cause: damaged blood vessel lining affects the penis and the heart.
  • Timing: erection problems often appear years before heart symptoms.
  • Heart check: cholesterol, blood sugar and risk score for every man with erectile dysfunction.
  • Calcium score: discussed when the heart risk is uncertain.

What else helps erections with high blood pressure?

Lifestyle changes lower blood pressure and improve erections at the same time. Weight loss and more activity improved erections in about one in three men with obesity.

  • Salt: cut back on salty and processed food.
  • Weight: lose excess weight.
  • Exercise: train aerobically most days.
  • Smoking and alcohol: stop smoking and drink less.

More questions about ED treatment with high blood pressure

What does ED treatment with high blood pressure cost?

The cost of ED treatment with high blood pressure depends on the tests you need and which treatment becomes part of your plan. You get the full cost in the consultation before anything starts.

Should I stop my blood pressure tablets?

No, never on your own. When a blood pressure tablet affects erections, Dr Felix switches it to one with less effect while keeping your blood pressure controlled.

Is sex safe with high blood pressure?

Yes, for most men with controlled blood pressure. The rise in heart rate and blood pressure during sex stays within the range of normal daily activities.

Do erection tablets lower blood pressure?

Slightly. Sildenafil lowers systolic blood pressure by about 8 mmHg, which is why dose and combinations are checked.
