HRT After Hysterectomy in Dubai
HRT after hysterectomy is simple with Dr Felix's personal care. There is no progestogen you do not need, no guessing whether your ovaries still work, and oestrogen is prescribed only after your personal risks are weighed.
Your first visit covers your operation, your symptoms and your family history. Dr Felix checks whether menopause has started and chooses the dose and route with you.

Oestrogen alone
Without a womb, a progestogen brings no benefit. Oestrogen alone is the usual HRT after hysterectomy.
Ovaries taken into account
Removed ovaries mean sudden menopause and often a higher dose. Kept ovaries mean menopause comes later and is checked with a blood test.

What does HRT after hysterectomy include?
HRT (hormone replacement therapy) after hysterectomy with Dr Felix includes 6 parts. The plan starts from your operation: whether the ovaries were removed and how long ago.
- Your operation: womb only, or womb and ovaries, and the reason for it.
- Symptoms: hot flushes, night sweats, sleep, mood and vaginal dryness.
- Blood test: FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) when the ovaries were kept, because periods no longer show menopause.
- Breast and heart: family history, screening history, blood pressure and cholesterol.
- Clot risk: earlier clots, weight and migraine, which decide between patch and tablet.
- Bones: fracture risk, especially after early removal of the ovaries.

Do I need a progestogen after hysterectomy?
No, women without a womb take oestrogen alone. A progestogen only protects the lining of the womb, so after hysterectomy it brings no health benefit.
Oestrogen alone even lowered breast cancer in the Women’s Health Initiative trial, with a hazard ratio of 0.78 over more than 20 years of follow-up (JAMA, 2020). Combined HRT, oestrogen with a progestogen, raised it.
What changes when the ovaries were removed?
Removal of both ovaries causes an immediate menopause with strong hot flushes. Women under 45 with removed ovaries often need a higher oestrogen dose until about 51, the average age of menopause.
After that age, the same risk review applies as for any woman after menopause. When the ovaries were kept, menopause comes at the usual time. An FSH above 25 international units per litre, together with hot flushes, points to the late menopause transition.
Which form of oestrogen fits after hysterectomy?
A patch or gel through the skin is the usual first choice after hysterectomy. Oestrogen through the skin avoids the higher risk of clots and stroke that tablets carry.
- Patch or gel: the first choice for most women, especially with a higher clot risk.
- Tablet: an option without migraine, gallbladder disease or high triglycerides.
- Body-identical oestradiol: the same molecule as the ovary makes.
- Vaginal oestrogen: for dryness and urinary symptoms alone.
What else helps after hysterectomy?
Bones, heart and sleep need attention after hysterectomy with or without HRT. Early menopause, including early removal of the ovaries, is linked to bone loss, so bone health is checked.
- Bones: weight-bearing exercise, calcium and vitamin D from food.
- Heart: blood pressure and cholesterol treated on their own.
- Sleep: snoring checked, because sleep apnoea often starts around menopause.
- Yearly review: dose, route and whether to continue.

More questions about HRT after hysterectomy
What does HRT after hysterectomy cost?
The cost of HRT after hysterectomy depends on the tests you need and which treatment becomes part of your plan. You get the full cost in the consultation before anything starts.
I kept my ovaries. Do I need HRT now?
Not until menopause starts. With kept ovaries, menopause comes at the usual age, and hot flushes plus an FSH blood test show when it begins.
Is oestrogen alone safer than combined HRT?
Yes, for breast cancer. In the Women's Health Initiative, oestrogen alone lowered breast cancer compared with placebo, while combined HRT raised it. Clot and stroke risk still depend on the form and dose.
How long can I take HRT after hysterectomy?
There is no fixed end date. The dose and the need for HRT are reviewed every year, and women under 45 with removed ovaries usually continue until about 51.
